I remember when brass fell out of favor. I used to gag going into bathrooms where every fixture was golden brass. But of course everything that is old is new again and with that brass is becoming chic once more! And I like it! I missed the warmth of brass. Butcher Block Countertops

I have been researching butcher block countertops for a client and really like the way they look! However, I am concerned about using them on the island where there sink is. Being that water is the enemy of wood I have a hard time believing that water won't ultimately win over time and that the looks will fade. I have used butcher block before but never in such close proximity to water. After looking through various photos I seem to be in the minority. Cookbook Storage

The best place to store cookbooks is obviously in the kitchen. But keeping books in the kitchen is dangerous. Heat, moisture and food can damage books so keeping them up and away from harm is prudent.  I also love the warmth and decorative element that books bring to a room. I find it interesting to see what people read. Of course we are all moving to digital forms of reading and the need for cumbersome books is dwindling  But just in case you need a place to store all of your old cookbooks, here are some ideas.

Marvelous Mosaics

Clean contemporary design is everywhere these days. Kitchens and bathrooms trends have simple white cabinetry and white marble countertops. While I am a fan of the white look, the most eye popping mosaics are available today in some truly amazing colors and patterns. These tiles look so great as a focal point for any area that tile work is needed...entries, fireplaces, floors, kitchens or bathrooms...

Kitchen Dining

What do you think of having a dining area in the kitchen? It was popular in the 50's and 60's to have the kitchen closed off from the dining area so you would not see the "mess" in the preparation area. Nowadays it is popular to have big open spaces so the cook is not isolated in the kitchen. I really prefer having the open design in anticipation of the meal. It is nice to smell the food and gather around before the meal is presented. Here are some kitchens that provide the eat-in experience either as a full dining room or a casual eating area.

Two Faced

Design is constantly changing and new ideas come and go...and then come back again. A hot trend in kitchen design has been two toned cabinetry over the last few years. Initially used with cabinetry styled as furniture in a wood finish and built-in cabinets in a painted finish it is now commonly seen to have the island one finish and the surrounding cabinets in another.
